Families Receiving Assistance January - December, 2009

The information presents the number of families receiving assistance from January, 2009 through December, 2009.  The process for requalification had not been completed for more than 2 years and was not computerized; therefore, the 1080 registered as of January 1, 2009 was reduced.  The requalification process was conducted from February 9 - March 6, 2009 with 218 families completing the application.  As of December 30, 2009, an additional 760 families registered for food assistance, and 24 families have been deleted and no longer receive assistance because some have moved or no longer require our help.  These numbers are a more realistic assessment of the families receiving services at this time.  Also, the change to family choice shopping eliminates bags being given to families because they select their foods according to a shopping list adjusted to accommodate family size.  Families receive of an average of 20 pounds of food per week.  During the Thanksgiving and Holiday shopping (Nov. 24-2, Dec. 22-23), families received an average of 35 pounds of food.  Families may continue to register for services on Wednesdays from 9 AM to   1 PM and Thursdays from 2 PM to 6:30 PM at the Food Shelf on Alden Avenue.
